We Don't Want the Raiders – We Want the Invaders! so the slogan went, hailing the coming of the new USFL's Bay Area team in Oakland. The Invaders had the fortuitous situation of being in the right place at the right time, filling the vacuum left by the NFL's Raiders, whose owner Al Davis always like to keep on the move. Once the dust settled, the Invaders seemed that they had put together on of the best teams in the USFL.
With Raider veterans Ray Chester, Arthur Whittington and Cedrick Hardman to helping to sell tickets, the Invaders put together a formidable offense with former NFL castoff Fred Besana leading the way at quarterback. Whittington ran for over 1,000 yards and Chester made All-Pro with 68 catches for 951 yards. With an average attendance of 31,211 per game the Invaders thrilled fans, making a strong 5–3 finish to end their inaugural season at 9–9. This was good enough for a playoff berth but they lost in the first round to the Michigan Panthers.
