The 1971-72 hockey set is undoubtedly the most famous and beloved set of the 1970s. In an era where card designs were designed to appeal to kids, we find that adults consistently rate this set as their favorite design. Released first by Topps as a 132-card set, the Canadian O-Pee-Chee card company doubled the Topps set with and expansive 264-card set that, in mint condition, fetches big money.  RetroCards has added another 36 cards in two separate series that covers 24 individual player cards, eight NHL Brothers cards, a Ken Dryden Conn Smyth Award card, a Stanley Cup Game card,...

The Los Angeles Express had a mediocre first season finishing with an 8–10 record. Despite being overlooked for any USFL All-Pro Teams, the express had several players that performed admirably. Offensively, the passing game was split between Tom Ramsey and Mike Rae and they distributed the ball to the likes of Ricky Ellis, Kris Haines and Anthony Allen. Running the ball was done by committee and no one player really stood out, leading to the Express finishing last in that category. Defensively, the pass rush we the strength of the team with Eric Scroggins, Greg Fields and Eddie Weaver totaling...

Denver was hungry for more pro football regardless of having the NFL’s Denver Broncos. Colorado residents showed their approval of their new team at the stadium turnstiles by leading the league in attendance with an average of 41,700 fans per game. This attendance came despite posting a losing record of 7–11 and while other team scrambled to ad star players, the Gold made due by signing strategic and affordable players.  Offensively, the Gold was led by the solid running game of Harry Sydney and Larry Canada but their passing game was a problem with neither Ken Johnson nor Jeff Knapple...

Coach Tom Fears had the task of building a team with some choice NFL veterans such as Charlie Bradshaw, Jim Taylor, Dave Whitsell, Bill Kilmer and Paul Hornung. The Saints took their stand in the Capitol Division, playing at Tulane Stadium. Like many expansion teams, the Saint only managed a losing record, going 3–11. The veterans were over the hill and Paul Hornung thought it best to retire before taking the field – probably a wise move. Rookies Dan Abramowicz and Dave Rowe were highlights however. Next year's champions finally won the big one in January 1972. The Dallas Cowboys became NFL Champions after defeating the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI. This game was never really close as Dolphin coach Don Shula said that the Dallas Defense "destroyed them." Though that is a true statement, it was the Cowboys ball control offense that managed the game with a solid ground game. This set takes the Pro Action design and applies it to the the Super Bowl winners. Several key players are singled out and get a posed head shot superimposed over a Super Bowl action...

The Tampa Bay Bandits made a splash by bringing on Burt Reynolds as a minority partner and good will ambassador in 1983, something much needed by the new league. Owner John Bassett put together an exciting team that featured retread NFL journeyman quarterback John Reaves and veterans Danny Buggs, Glen Edwards, Zenon Andrusyshyn and Doug Beaudoin. The pass-first mentality of coach Steve Spurrier paid off as the combined passing accounted for over 4,000 yards and 27 touchdown passes. But as Spurrier often encountered, live by the pass, die by the pass as the Bandits suffered down the stretch by throwing...

The Redskins made the playoffs in 1971 for the first time in 26 seasons and coach George Allen went for the gusto in his second season with the team. To put the team over the top, Allen adopted a method of bringing in veterans he could count. Allen’s success in Los Angeles didn’t translate into a Championship, nonetheless Allen saw fit to bring as many Rams to Washington as he could: Diron Talbert, Jack Pardee, Myron Pottios in addition to several other veterans like Speedy Duncan, John Wilbur, Rosey Taylor, Alvin Haymond, Richie Petitbon and Roy Jefferson. Despite injuries to...

The New Jersey Generals made the biggest splash during the inaugural USFL season by signing the biggest college star, Herschel Walker. Oddly, in those days signing an underclassman was taboo and apparently several colleges stonewalled the USFL. No matter because the USFL made a killing by stealing some of colleges biggest stars like Trumaine Johnson, Kelvin, Bryant, Craig James, and Anthony Carter. The Generals had great offense once Walker got rolling, but a low ranking defense accounted for their 6–12 record in 1983. This RetroCards sets concentrates on the 1983 General stars and contributors: Sam Bowers, Gene Bradley, Larry Brodsky,...
